Mrs. Tibbs RTI classes participated in the U of I Extension McLean County STEAM in the Classroom Chick It Out Program.  The eggs were picked up on April 2nd.  The

students monitored and recorded the incubator temp during the 21 day process, learning about the anatomy of an egg, the difference between a fertilized and unfertilized egg, and all the things chickens and eggs are used for.  Students completed a few STEM projects;  they had to see how tall of a tower they could build out of plastic eggs, they created a "cushion" to see if their eggs could survive a drop.

They witnessed what vinegar does  to an egg in 24 and 36 hours, and collaborated together to create an egg structure holding books, realizing egg shells are much stronger than they thought.

The chicks were scheduled to hatch on or around Monday, April 23.................  They decided they weren't ready until Wednesday, April 25 and Thursday, April 26th.   During the pipping process the students got to witness chicks hatching from start to finish.  The final count for our chicks is 7 out of 12 that's pretty good!  Now the chicks are living in a brooding box that was won from the McLean County Extension Office, in the classroom.  The students are watching the chicks grow and love until the end of the week.
