Christyn Biswell, OHS math teacher, is sponsoring Olympia High School’s Math Team which competes in the ICTM Math Contest on February 24, 2018 at Illinois Central College in East Peoria.

This is the first year Olympia High school has had a math team. Mrs. Biswell said that no teacher at Olympia can recall a math team being at Olympia.

Mrs. Biswell sponsored a math team her previous last school and really enjoyed it. She said, “I am just excited for the math team to go see all of the students excited about math, it's just a fun day for math.” The math team is not a huge time commitment, but it is still a good way to showcase the skills of upper level math students.

The Illinois Council of Teachers and Mathematics hosts a math contest year and this will be Olympia’s first year competing. A total of 16 high schoolers have already joined the team and are preparing for the competition.

The contest will consist of three different sections, and each student may participate in a maximum of one area of competition from each of the following groups:

Competition A - Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, Pre-Calculus

Competition B - Freshman-Sophomore Two Person Team, Junior-Senior Eight Person Team

Competition C - Calculator Team, Freshman-Sophomore Eight Person Team, Junior-Senior Two Person Team

There is an awards ceremony after the Math Contest; students can win individually or as a team. Winning teams will advance to the State Finals which are held on March 5.

The Math Team has been practicing during advisory in order to do as well as they possibly can during the tournament. Emme Olsen, OHS Math Team Senior, said, “I chose to join math team because I was interested in challenging myself academically, and also it never hurts to add a little something special in your life.”
